Exercise, CKD, Fitness

Exercise is one of the most underutilized tools in CKD care. It improves cardiovascular health, preserves muscle, and may even slow decline. Here's what works best.

General Guidelines

  • • 150 mins of moderate aerobic activity per week
  • • Add strength training 2x/week
  • • Focus on consistency, not intensity

Best Exercises

  • • Walking, cycling, swimming
  • • Chair yoga or low-impact aerobics (stage 3–4)
  • • Resistance bands, light weights (if cleared)

What to Avoid

  • • Heavy lifting if BP is uncontrolled
  • • Dehydration during hot weather workouts
  • • High-intensity if on dialysis unless supervised

Bonus: Mental Health Boost

Exercise helps reduce anxiety and depression common in CKD patients.
